Festival of Lights Diwali 2016 in Cambourne

Diwali Festival 2016 at Combourne

Cambourne is becoming increasingly multicultural, and people from all over the world are making Cambourne their home. Therefore, many international celebrations also take place. Councillor Shrobona Bhattacharya organised the Festival of Lights, commonly known as Diwali, at the Hub Community Centre for general awareness, where all people were invited to participate in the celebration. People in India and other South Asian countries light candles around their houses to signify the triumph of good over evil, hope over despair.

People in Cambourne from various nations tried on colourful Sarees and Kurtas. Children made Rangoli designs with the sand colours and enjoyed sparklers as part of the Festival. Cambourne Time Bank Co-ordinator Laura Papanikolaou helped organise this celebration throughout.

Our main goal was to make everyone feel included and part of the festival. We wanted to create a homely atmosphere and engage people in various activities. Living together with different colours makes a beautiful rainbow in the community. The event was free for all, and a delicious homemade Indian meal was made for everyone.

Cambridge Professor Shumone Ray raised £100 for his slum community kitchen in Kolkata through the NNEd Project on the Festival night.
