CERC Workshop at Makespace, Cambridge 2018-Exploring Innovation

Workshop at MakeSpace Cambridge 2018

Unleashing Creativity in Cambourne’s Youth

In the summer of 2018, August 19th, the young minds of the Cambourne Electronics and Robotics Club (CERC) embarked on an exciting journey of discovery at a workshop at Makespace, Cambridge. The workshop, focused on 3D Printing and Laser Cutting, was a collaborative effort led by Cambourne residents and CERC ambassadors Doroteja Maklin and Matic Golob, along with the guidance of Dr. Sujit Bhattacharya and Cllr. Dr. Shrobona Bhattacharya.

Makespace: A Hub of Innovation

Makespace, situated in Cambridge, served as the ideal venue for the workshop. A community workplace dedicated to engineering projects, skill-sharing, and hands-on workshops, Makespace boasts an array of cutting-edge equipment, including lathes, laser cutters, 3D printers, and tools for textiles and jewellery making.

From Lecture to Practice

Doroteja Maklin and Matic Golob started the workshop with insightful lectures on laser cutting techniques and 3D printing. The young participants, accompanied by their parents, delved into a hands-on experience, creatively exploring the alternative manufacturing methods of 3D printing and laser cutting.

Children eagerly worked on various projects, from crafting 3D logos and coins to assembling different parts of robots, robot cars, frames, and holders. The practical, interactive session fueled their curiosity and enthusiasm for technology.

Mentoring Minds for the Future

Dr. Sujit, the club’s mentor, engaged the children in constructing hands-on electronics projects, providing them with a glimpse into real-world technology. Cllr. Bhattacharya emphasized the club’s commitment to building confidence among children through diverse STEM projects in Cambourne, including the Science Festival, Electronics and Robotics Club, and engaging workshops.

Fun and Learning with Professionals

Doroteja and Matic, both professional designers, innovation catalysts, and authors, found joy in working with enthusiastic children. They shared their expertise, making the learning experience educational and fun for the young participants.

Encouraging Curiosity for Future Explorations

The CERC workshop at Makespace exposed Cambourne’s youth to cutting-edge technologies and ignited a passion for exploration and innovation. As the children left with a sense of accomplishment, the workshop laid the foundation for future STEM endeavours, encouraging continuous curiosity and learning.
