Introduction:

In the face of the pandemic-induced lockdown, Cllr. Shrobona Bhattacharya embarked on a culinary journey transcending physical barriers, creating a “New-Social” phenomenon called Come Cook Dine with Me. This innovative initiative brought people together virtually and fostered a sense of community, resilience, and well-being.

A COVID Outreach Programme:

As the lockdown unfolded, Cllr. Shrobona Bhattacharya initiated a COVID Outreach Programme that started with a weekly cooking session on Zoom every Saturday at 11 am and began on June 11, 2020. The unique twist? Participants would then convene for a virtual dinner at 1 pm, sharing the meal they cooked with their families. In the era of social distancing, this initiative became a shining example of building a “stronger community.”

The Principles of Come Cook Dine with Me:

Cllr. Bhattacharya emphasized the core principles driving Come Cook Dine with Me — low cost, minimal wastage, nutrition, immunity, and overall well-being. Home cooking took centre stage, ensuring the consumption of fresh, wholesome meals devoid of hidden chemicals, additives, excessive sugar, salt, and fat.

Indian Cuisine as a Unifying Thread:

Recognizing the universal appeal of Indian cuisine, Cllr. Bhattacharya opted for staple Indian dishes, mirroring what families cook for their loved ones at home daily. The ingredient list was shared a week in advance, allowing everyone to prepare. The sessions went beyond cooking, delving into techniques, secrets, and creative spice combinations to enrich the culinary experience.

Kitchen Wisdom Shared:

Cllr. Bhattacharya found joy in sharing kitchen wisdom and traditional knowledge with participants. The sessions weren’t just about learning to cook; they became a source of connection, particularly for those missing social gatherings or feeling lonely during lockdown. The shared experience of cooking the same meal in different kitchens, documented through posted photos, created a sense of unity despite the physical distance.

The Heart of the Community:

Come Cook Dine with Me became a beacon of positivity and resilience, offering various reasons for people to join. Some sought the camaraderie of social gatherings, others yearned for a learning opportunity, and many wanted to combat the isolation of lockdown. The virtual dinner table became the heart of a community where diverse individuals connected through a shared love for food and a desire to stay connected.

Conclusion: A Culinary Haven in Challenging Times

Amid the uncertainty, Come Cook Dine with Me emerged as more than a cooking program; it became a culinary haven that nourished both the body and the spirit. Cllr. Shrobona Bhattacharya’s innovative approach brought people together around the virtual dinner table. It demonstrated the resilience and strength that can be found in the community, even in the face of social distancing challenges.
