Volunteering in Cambourne 2019

In a proactive initiative, District Councillor for Cambourne, Shrobona Bhattacharya, played a pivotal role in launching the rollout of timebanking in South Cambs. The unveiling took place at a presentation held at the South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC) offices last month.

Volunteering in Cambourne: A Currency of Giving Back

Timebanking, exemplified by the successful Cambourne Timebank founded in 2012, is an exchange-based volunteering system where hours serve as the currency. This innovative approach facilitates the giving and receiving of support and fosters the development of social networks. Individuals from diverse backgrounds connect, forming friendships and vital social connections that contribute to overall community well-being.

Preventing Needs Through Social Capital

The essence of time banking lies in preventing needs from arising by generating “social capital.” This term encapsulates the collective value of social networks, fostering resilience and well-being. By participating in time banking, members contribute to the strength of their community.

Diverse Ways to Give Back

Members of timebanks can engage in various activities, either as part of a team or by offering practical assistance. Examples include pet-sitting, assisting elderly neighbours with household tasks, and organizing community events like weekly coffee mornings, annual Christmas lunches, and film nights.

Cllr Bhattacharya’s Involvement and Impact

Councillor Bhattacharya, the founder of CamCare UK, a local registered charity, emphasized the collaborative efforts with Cambourne Timebank. “As a member of Timebank, I’ve picked up many jobs and visited elderly people, fixed computers or mobile phones, and taken patients to the hospital for appointments,” she shared. This hands-on involvement reflects the tangible impact of time banking on the lives of community members.

Earning Credits for a Helping Hand

Volunteers with Cambourne Timebank contribute their time and skills and earn credits that can be exchanged for assistance from others. Additionally, volunteers can receive vouchers redeemed at selected leisure and entertainment venues.
